How Are We Achieving It?

I must admit that I personally measure success
in terms of the contribution an individual makes
to her or his fellow human beings.

Our 2009/2010 Partnerships and Projects

·                     Caromont Farm (www.caromontfarm.com)

Thanks to the support and compassion of Gail Hobbs-Page and her husband Daniel, we’ve had a long term, rewarding partnership with Caromont Farm.  Our participants provide service to Gail and Daniel, while receiving the amazing benefit of spending time with their animals, connecting with real farmers and learning about goat farming first hand,.   We’ve helped with projects ranging from mucking the barns to packing and delivering cheese.   We sure do love goats!

Carly and Liza helped bottle feed babies on their visit to the farm.

·                     Recycling assistance

This is a program near and dear to our hearts.  It’s wonderful to see people of all ages really getting into recycling, but sometimes there’s confusion around what to recycle and where to recycle it.  We help to educate community members about recycling and in some cases, provide assistance to those who have difficulty with transportation, like the elderly.

·                     The Haven at First and Market  (http://www.facebook.com/TheHavenatFirstandMarket)

This is a day program for the homeless in Charlottesville and what a great idea it is.  The Haven provides comprehensive services and support for the homeless, which include, among other things:  meals, resources, hope, and dignity.  We’ve been pleased to procure some supplies for their community garden project, such as seeds from Integral Yoga and manure from Caromont.  We've also enjoyed bringing them personal bodycare products donated by Whole Foods Market and local citizens.

·                     Park Street Academy  (www.parkstreetacademy.org)

Park Street Academy was established by Vanessa Camperlengo in 2009, as a resource for parents with children, who have unique learning needs.  We were excited to learn about PSA and were able to help them set up a small farm environment at their lovely, rural school in the woods.  We helped them build fence for their cows and donkey, clean up underbrush, set up their chicken coop and establish a raised bed for their vegetables.  Our Program Director,Tara, serves as adjunct faculty for PSA, providing education about the environment, animals, and animal husbandry.  We have really enjoyed our relationship with the children and teachers there.  They’re wonderful.

The small farm environment at PSA is one of the things that makes it such a special environment for learning.

·                     Broomfield Farm

We’ve recently established a partnership with Laura at Broomfield Farm.  She’s caring for eight elderly horses and 200 acres all by herself.  We’ve stepped in to help her with horse care and general farm maintenance.   It looks like the beginning of a great relationship and we’re excited to see what happens in the future.
